CPAC 2013: The 40th Annual Conservative Political Action Conference

Wow, what a week.  Just like the very first CPAC conference I attended while still in college back in 1979, to this last one that ended yesterday…I leave fired up, rejuvenated and better grounded in the principles of our conservative movement.

While the press dubbed me the “Mayor of CPAC”, this year I was honored to be asked to serve as the Program Director for CPAC.  I worked with the board, sponsors and a very talented staff to put together one of the largest, most diverse, “younger” and future oriented conference we had in a long time.  Our new venue, the Gaylord National Harbor Resort, proved to be a great place for our ever growing program and participants.

Bottom line, THOUSANDS of conservatives from all over the country heard great speakers, panels and rekindle or made new friends in the conservative movement.

One of my proudest accomplishments was the implementation the introduction of the “10 under 40” conservative leaders from around the country.  CPAC has started a new annual tradition of introducing our “young” leaders from around the country to movement activists nationwide.  They received extensive press coverage, exposure to activists and organizations, networked amongst themselves and hopefully help lead our national conservative movement forward.

In my opinion…the future is bright!

Here is a CPAC Photo Gallery & coverage from POLITICO:

U.S. Senate in Michigan

While at CPAC I had a chance to talk with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and many other conservative leaders from across the country.  Michigan’s Senate seat is definitely on the map and everyone recognizes the opportunity that exists for Michigan Republicans to pick up this seat.

We had a great contingency of activists from Michigan who also attended CPAC as well as a great network conservative funders and activists who took a great interest in the race.

I shared my interest in exploring the possibility of throwing my hat in the ring and discussed the field of other potentially strong Republican candidates who could win this seat.

As we continue these conversations over the weeks to come, I am confident that Michigan Republicans will put forth one or more strong, common sense conservatives who can help turn this country around and represent our state well.

As always, I appreciate your thoughts, comments and suggestions.

Ben Carson announces retirement, feeds presidential speculation at CPAC

I have rarely been more impressed with a man, his message and sincerity.  I had a chance to speak with him privately and can tell you he’s the real thing.  I hope he seriously considers public service…America needs men like him!

Romney: Learn from ‘My Mistakes’

Mitt Romney was a class act.  This could not have been an easy conference for him to attend.  But with conviction, vision and humility he challenged the conservative movement and the party to learn from his mistakes.  He thanked our “troops” and encouraged all to fight on.

The crowd at CPAC greeted him with a warm and enthusiastic standing ovation.  Clearly viewed and respected for his efforts, he was an important part of passing the torch on to the new generation.

Sarah Palin, entertainer – Yeh, but…

As I watched and listened to Sarah Palin deliver her speech at CPAC, it was amazing how many folks were nodding their heads while others commented… “she’s saying what others would like to, but can’t”.

I think she has moved over from someone who was a political leader to someone who is now an “entertaining” but effective spokesperson for conservatives.  Her plain spoken, entertaining and “straight talk” approach appealed to many at the conference and I’m sure around America.

She’s moved into a new role, but still a force, if not a growing force to be dealt with.
